So what

A star rating cannot separate Heirloom Tomato Candle (4.92) from Petrichor Candle (4.76); the difference is 0.16 of a star. Everything that distinguishes these products is in the review text.

Seven in ten reviews were written for an incentive.

The review platform flags reviews written in exchange for an incentive. Of 7,060 reviews in scope, 5,114 carry the flag. The incentive buys stars and it buys length.

3,365 of 4,560 candle reviews; 1,748 of 2,500 soap reviews.

So what

This is disclosed and legal, and it works. But review volume is a marketing spend, not a demand signal. Only 1,946 reviews (27.6%) were written without an incentive; any claim built on “thousands of five-star reviews” should stand on that base.

Finding 03 · SubstanceProject R · 04 / 12

69.8% of candle reviews make no checkable claim.

A review either states something a shopper can verify (it fills the room, it burns evenly, it smells like the real thing) or it states affect. Most state affect.

So what

Sentiment cannot be quoted on a product page, cannot answer “will it fill my living room”, and gives an AI assistant nothing to cite. Soaps run more concrete (36.8%) because skin feel is easy to describe; people write specifics when the product hands them a dimension to describe.

Finding 04 · MotiveProject R · 05 / 12

Gifting and superlatives predict five stars. Price talk predicts complaints.

Nine motives scored across 4,560 candle and 2,500 soap reviews. Lift is the motive's rate in five-star reviews divided by its rate in one-to-three-star reviews: above 1× predicts a rave, below 1× a complaint.

So what

Sensory verification is 74.1% of candle reviews: the buyer took a risk on an unsmellable purchase and is reporting whether it paid off. Gifting runs 3.52× and “best ever” 3.47× in five-star reviews; price talk runs 1.7× more often in low ones.

Finding 05 · ValidationProject R · 06 / 12

A candle is validated many ways. A soap is validated one way.

Share of reviews in each category that make each concrete claim. The top five candle claims sit between 4.7% and 8.7% with no clear leader. Soap reviews lean on one claim, skin feel, at 22.6%, 4.2× the next.

Skin feel appears in 22.6% of soap reviews and runs 2.73× in five-star reviews versus low ones. No candle claim exceeds 8.7%. A candle page has several questions to answer; a soap page has one, to answer very well.

The two personalized candles over-index on gift reception by +19.3 and +16.5 points: they are gifts, merchandised as candles. The candle sets over-index on packaging by +13.1 and +12.8; the box is doing the selling. Douglas Fir Vetiver Candle (83.8%) and Petrichor Candle (85.5%) are the only candles with 100+ reviews below 92.5% five-star.

Finding 07 · FailureProject R · 08 / 12

One candle failure mode, and it has a name.

Inside the 109 candle reviews at three stars or below, complaints concentrate on the scent not leaving the jar. The same axis, as praise, is the second most common claim in the whole candle corpus.

Throw is the axis the category is judged on, in both directions. State the room size and the throw behaviour per SKU on the product page and the number one complaint becomes a spec.

10,117 room votes sit unused. Soaps collect nothing at all.

Six moves, starting with the customers' own words.

Left: the phrases most over-represented in five-star reviews against one-to-three-star reviews. None of them appear on the product pages today in this form; they are the copy brief. Right: the moves the data earns, in payback order.

  1. Put the review language on the product page

Every candle page answers the questions reviewers already answer (does it smell real, does it throw, does it burn clean), in the customers' words. Copy, not engineering.

  2. Name the throw before the buyer finds out

Weak throw is the top complaint in low candle reviews (12.8%) and throw is the second most common praise (7.5%). State it per SKU.

  3. Instrument the soap form

Lather, scent strength, bar life, skin type. 2,500 soap reviews carry zero structured data today.

  4. Ship the room map

10,117 “Perfect for…” votes become room collections and on-page proof. Already paid for, currently invisible.

  5. Merchandise the gift SKUs as gifts

Personalized candles over-index on gift reception by +19.3 and +16.5 points; the sets on packaging by +13.1 and +12.8.

  6. Fix Douglas Fir Vetiver and Petrichor

The two candles with 100+ reviews and the lowest five-star share (83.8%, 85.5%). Lead complaints: weak throw, scent mismatch.
